London's Motoring History – AEC, the Builders of London's Buses

Historic photo of the AEC works at Southall

London has been building working vehicles for more than 100 years. AEC, the Associated Equipment Company, started out at Blackhorse Lane in Walthamstow, building buses for the London General Omnibus Company. Its B-type bus of 1910 is seen as one of the first mass-produced commercial vehicles.

During the First World War, AEC became Britain's biggest maker of lorries, building more than 10,000 Y-type lorries for the army.

In 1927, AEC moved to a big new works in Southall, West London. For the next 50 years, buses and lorries rolled out of Southall, including the famous Routemaster, which first appeared as a prototype in 1954.

The Southall works closed on 25 May 1979, but the red Routemaster is still one of the best-known symbols of London.
