Leicester's Motoring History – The Clyde Car
Leicester once had its own car manufacturer, G.H. Wait & Co., which produced cars under the Clyde name during the early 1900s.
One of its cars, built in 1908 and nicknamed the Old Grey Mare, is now part of Leicester Museums' collection at Abbey Pumping Station.
Around 250 Clyde cars were produced in Leicester, and the Old Grey Mare is the only known surviving example. It was originally sold to a local doctor before eventually returning to the manufacturer.
It's a rare reminder of Leicester's early involvement in British car manufacturing.
