London's Motoring History – The World's First Traffic Light
The world's first traffic light went up in London in December 1868, outside the Houses of Parliament, at the junction of Bridge Street and Great George Street.
It was designed by John Peake Knight, a railway manager from Nottingham, and copied the signals used on the railways. It stood about 20 feet tall, with arms that rose during the day and red and green gas lamps at night, all worked by a policeman.
About a month later, a leaking gas main made the light explode, badly burning the policeman operating it. The idea was dropped, and traffic lights didn't return to Britain's roads for more than 40 years.
A plaque on Bridge Street marks the spot today. By the light's 150th anniversary in 2018, Transport for London was looking after around 6,000 traffic signals across the city.
