North London's Motoring History – Lotus in Hornsey
Lotus, one of Britain's most famous sports car makers, started in North London. Its founder, Colin Chapman, grew up in Muswell Hill, and his father ran the Railway Hotel on Tottenham Lane, next to Hornsey station.
On 1 January 1952, Chapman set up the Lotus Engineering Company and moved his workshop into the old stables behind his dad's pub at 7 Tottenham Lane. The first 100 Lotus Sevens were built there before the firm moved to Cheshunt in 1959.
Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin, who later founded Cosworth, both worked at the Hornsey works. Team Lotus went on to win seven Formula One constructors' championships.
A plaque put up in 1984 still marks the old Lotus buildings, and in 2004 Haringey Council added 7 Tottenham Lane to its list of locally listed buildings.
