South London's Motoring History – The Crystal Palace Circuit

London once had its own motor racing circuit, in Crystal Palace Park. Motorbikes raced through the park from 1927, and in April 1937 a new two-mile road circuit opened for cars.
In July 1937, Prince Bira won the first London Grand Prix there in an ERA. Later that year, the BBC broadcast racing from Crystal Palace, the first live television coverage of motor sport.
After the war, racing came back in 1953 on a shorter track of just under 1.4 miles. Stars like Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt all raced there, and in 1970 Rindt became the first driver to lap it at over 100mph.
The last race meeting was held on 23 September 1972, and most of the circuit was later removed. Parts of the old track can still be spotted in the park, and classic car sprints have been held there in recent years.
