East London's Motoring History – Britain's First Petrol Car
The first petrol car built in Britain came from East London. In 1892, a 20-year-old plumber and gas fitter called Frederick Bremer started building a car in the workshop behind his family home on Connaught Road, Walthamstow.
Working with his assistant, Tom Bates, he used plenty of ideas borrowed from bicycles and fitted a single-cylinder petrol engine. The finished car had a top speed of about 8mph, and Bremer took it out for test drives on the streets of Walthamstow.
In 1912, The Motor magazine looked at the rival claims and named the Bremer car the first British-built petrol car. Bremer later gave it to Walthamstow's new Vestry House Museum, where it became the star exhibit.
While Vestry House was being refurbished, the car went on loan to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu.
