Coventry's Motoring History – Britain's First Car Factory
Coventry is where the British car industry began.
In 1896, the Daimler Motor Company took over an empty cotton mill beside the canal in the city and renamed it the Motor Mills. It became the first company in Britain to build cars on a commercial basis.
A year later, a Coventry-built Daimler made the first ever car journey from John o' Groats to Land's End. In 1900, the Prince of Wales bought one, which helped make the motor car fashionable. Much of the factory was destroyed in the 1940 Blitz, but the old Daimler Powerhouse still stands today.
Over the next century, names like Triumph, Jaguar and Rootes followed, and Coventry became known as Britain's motor city.
