Rugby's Engineering History – The First Jet Engine

Rugby has a proud engineering past, and one of its biggest moments happened at the British Thomson-Houston works on Leicester Road.
BTH started production in Rugby in 1900, making electric motors, generators, steam turbines and light bulbs. It became one of the town's biggest employers for decades.
On 12 April 1937, a young RAF officer called Frank Whittle ran his prototype jet engine for the first time in a BTH test hall in Rugby. The work later moved up the road to Lutterworth, and his engines went on to power Britain's first jet aircraft.
It's a reminder that the town has been building and fixing engines for well over a century.
