West London's Motoring History – The Golden Mile
West London's Great West Road was built for the motor age. The new stretch past Brentford opened in 1925 to bypass the jammed Brentford High Street, and car firms soon set up along it. Hudson-Essex Motors opened a factory there in 1927.
In October 1928, the Firestone Tyre Company opened its first factory outside America on what became known as the Golden Mile. It was a striking Art Deco building on a 26-acre site, and just along the road, Trico made windscreen wipers.
Firestone closed in February 1980, with the loss of 1,500 jobs. The government was about to list the building, but developers knocked it down over the August bank holiday weekend, days before the listing could be signed.
The loss led to better protection for the rest of the Golden Mile. Firestone's gates and railings were listed in 2001, and they can still be seen on the Great West Road today.
